There is no doubt that medical oxygen is the basic medicine used to care for patients at all levels of the healthcare system, including surgery, trauma, heart failure, asthma and pneumonia, and maternal and child care. However, such effective and life-saving treatments for critically ill patients are rare in medical institutions in many countries.

It is for this reason that Paelon Memorial Hospital, Africa’s leading multi-specialty hospital, in cooperation with IHS Nigeria, one of the world’s largest independent owners, managers and developers of shared telecommunications infrastructure, recently commissioned a new gas Bottle factory.

Obviously, the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated global oxygen demand and made the delivery of oxygen supply more urgent. In low- and middle-income communities, the lack of medical oxygen and supply shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic have caused patients to face delays in receiving critical assistance. This is why we ensure an adequate supply of medical oxygen for future use.

During the commissioning conducted by the Paelon Victoria Island branch, where the gas plant is located, in accordance with the COVID-19 agreement, there was an in-depth discussion on the future of African healthcare and what this infrastructure advancement means for quality healthcare in Nigeria.

During the commissioning activities, Dr. Ngozi Onyia, Managing Director of PAELON, pointed out: "We have established a good cooperative relationship with IHS Towers for three years, and this project is a continuation of this cooperative relationship.

"The oxygen generation plant will ensure that there will be no oxygen shortage in PAELON. If there is an oxygen shortage in the state, Paelon can provide services to other hospitals. This is our own quota to ensure oxygen supply."

This achievement is known for its innovative measures to make everyone's life better, and this achievement further proves that Paelon Memorial Hospital is committed to expanding its horizons for the greater good.

This partnership aimed at improving the supply of oxygen in a healthy ecosystem is a sustainable development initiative of IHS Nigeria, which aims to give back to the community, provide positive social value and contribute to Nigeria’s renewable energy.

IHS Nigeria is part of IHS Towers, one of the largest independent owners, managers and developers of shared telecommunications infrastructure in the world. More than 16,000 of IHS' 30,207 towers are located in Nigeria.

IHS’s sustainable development strategy is based on four strategic pillars—education, people, environment, and ethics—to guide its interaction with local communities.
